Lisbon is a fascinating city that in many ways will remind you of San Francisco, only its history is ancient. Over the centuries, both natural and political events have forced it to reinvent itself several times. As you explore the hills you will notice the renewal and the influence from the Moorish culture to its stunning modern architecture. The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology near Belém, will give you goose bumps.
Sintra maybe a bit touristy but it is like entering a fairytale, surrounded by dramatic mountains, luscious forest and colorful palaces agains the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.
Before we leave Portugal to cross into Spain, our last stop will be Lagos. This place will captivate you with its stunning coastline that at sunset seem like they have been flooded and painted with gold.
The first city in southern Spain on our journey will be the birth place of Picasso, Malaga. Here we will be staying in one of those creative boutique hotel sandwiched between a Roman amphitheatre, a Moorish fortress or the polychromatic Pompidou Centre, to experience on our skin how Málaga has reinvented itself. A trip to the local market of Ataranzas will be a must.
While in Granada, one day we will adventure to the land of thousand castles, Granada. Here the Islamic architecture and Arab-flavoured street life go hand in hand with ancient churches, old-school tapas bars and counterculture graffiti art.
Eventually we will reach Valencia, a city with incredible futuristic building (City of Art and Science) many designed by Santiago Calatrava. We will enjoy walks on the beach and around the characterful old quarter and of course Valencia’s, famous paella.
The last three days will continue to be full of amazing sites, food, beaches, markets and more as we enjoy all that Barcelona has to offer. We must visit the most unique and beautiful church in the world, the Sagrada Familia to which Gaudi dedicated forty years of his life designing it.
We cannot leave Spain without a stunning tour of one of the world’s most ancient and emblematic market, Boqueria. In the early 1200s this was the open air meat market of Barcelona and over the century it has become the fulcrum of social life and food tasting and shopping.
