A day in Cabo Frio…

Before going to the beach, check out Gamboa Street, known as the Bikini Street; Gamboa has many shops specializing in beach wear at low prices: bikinis, sarongs, sandals, shorts, etc. When you arrive at the beach you will see Forte Sao Mateus, a stronghold against pirates built in the early 17th century to protect the lucrative brazilwood trade.  This is also a perfect spot to enjoy the 180 degree view of Praia (beach) do Forte and downtown Cabo Frio. Don’t leave the beach without buying an açai (local berry smoothie) from a cart, this is totally a must!

As you adventure through the city you may spot vendors of pineapple on bikes, for a couple of dollars this will be the best pineapple you’ve ever tried. Climb the small hill in the center of town to the Morro da Guia Chapel to get a fabulous panoramic view of CaboFrio.  Inside the small closed chapel is a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary.  The story goes that she was originally in the church at the foot of the hill but every morning they found her at the top so eventually they just left her there!
