Ancient Towns of Puglia and Calabria – May 5-18th – 2019Lecce, Alberobello, Monopoli, Maratea, and more

Arrive in Brindisi (airport code BDS) on May 5th – (This requires that you fly the day before from the USA)

Upon arrival check in for 4 nights in elegant B&B in Lecce, from here we will explore the famous Salento region and its beautiful towns on the Adriatic Sea. We will also hang out with a gelato maker, then make a stop in Manduria for a day completely dedicated to wine tasting. We will then travel north and inland toward the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Valle D’Itria, here we will spend time in Alberobello, Locorotondo, and Cisternino surrounded by endless fields of ancient olive trees. Relax around the pool is also part of the plan. Finally, before we depart from Puglia, we will be making bread (Pane di Altamura) with Giuseppe.

We will spend two nights in Matera, the second world most ancient town after Petra. Due to its unique setting, this town is often the set of movies such as The Passion of Christ, Ben-Hur, The Omen, and most recently Wonder Woman. From here we will travel toward the toe of the Italian boot, stopping for a hike around a completely abandon town and then finally settle in a castle for three nights. The view of the Tyrrhenian Sea will keep us company as we travel north and south toward San Nicola and Maratea.

From here, on your own you can spend a few days in the nearby Amalfi Coast (2 hours drive), Pompei and Ercolano, or Rome.

At the end of the journey, you can choose to fly back from Naples or Rome (They are both reachable by train).

“We adventured a few days on our own and then joined Antimo in Puglia for eight days. What a huge difference it makes to travel accompanied by such a charming, passionate, young man, not to mention native to the area and respected by everyone! Thanks for all the driving too!”
